Honda Odyssey holds 32 Percent of Retail Market Share

In an analysis of IHS Automotive data, the Honda Odyssey was purchased more than any other minivan in the U.S. in 2014, according to Honda. This makes the Honda Odyssey the best-selling minivan in 2014.

“Odyssey retail registrations of 119,615 units continue to make it the top choice among retail minivan customers,” according to a Honda press release. That’s “32 percent retail segment share.”

2014’s best-selling minivan debuted in 1995 and is now in its fourth generation, which started production in 2011, according to Edmunds. In 2013 the LX model gained a rearview camera standard as well as Bluetooth connectivity and a USB interface. The 2015 Honda Odyssey is sure to follow its best-selling minivan heritage. It has the best residual value for minivans, according to the ALG. On top of that, the 2015 Honda Odyssey is an IIHS Top Safety Pick. The Odyssey and 2015 Kia Sedona were the only two minivans to receive a “good” rating in the small overlap frontal crash test. Here’s a look at the 2015 Honda Odyssey’s performance, safety, and features, and how it also compares to previous generations.

Performance of a Best-Selling Minivan

The 2015 Honda Odyssey has a V-6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The second generation Odyssey saw the addition of the V-6 engine and had a 4-speed automatic transmission until 2002, according to Edmunds. The 5-speed automatic transmission was present throughout the third generation. In 2013, the 6-speed automatic transmission became standard on the LX, EX, and EX-L models. The 2015 Odyssey gets 248 horsepower. The third generation Odyssey was rated 244 horsepower and the second generation was initially rated with 210 horsepower in 1999, but saw an improvement to 240 horsepower with the 2002 model year. When the Odyssey first debuted it was rated 140 horsepower. There has been a definite improvement in performance over the years.

Safety Features and Ratings

The 2015 Honda Odyssey comes standard with an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, a rearview camera, and more for active safety features. Passive safety features include, but are not limited to, 3-point seat belts at all seating locations, side curtain airbags, SmartVent front side airbags, and the LATCH system. The EX-L and Touring trims come standard with a forward collision warning and a lane departure warning. The Touring Elite model comes with a blind spot information system. This system incorporates sensors on each rear corner of the vehicle and will alert the driver to objects in their blind spot. The EX and above models have Honda LaneWatch.

As for safety ratings, in 2008 the Odyssey received its first Top Safety Pick designation from the IIHS. The best-selling minivan was a safety pick in 2009 and also in 2011 through the current model year. In NHTSA ratings the Odyssey saw improvement after the 1997 model year. For 1995 to 1997, the Odyssey was 4-star rated in the driver crash test. The 2008 model was not rated. The 1999 through 2010 model years are 5-star rated in the driver and front passenger crash tests. In 2011 the NHTSA introduced tougher crash tests, but the Odyssey met the challenge. The 2011 through 2015 model years are 5-star rated overall.

Odyssey Features

One of the most popular features of the Odyssey is its fold-flat third row of seats, which is a feature it has had across all generations, according to Edmunds. The Odyssey didn’t receive dual-sliding doors until its second generation. Second-row sunshades as well as a rear entertainment system became options on the third-generation models. Current features include:

  • Rear Entertainment System Available on the EX-L, standard on Touring and Touring Elite models
  • Steering-Wheel-Mounted Controls Standard

  • HondaVAC Touring Elite model

The 2015 Honda Odyssey seats seven in the LX model and eight in the EX and above. The Odyssey also has 148.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row.
