The 2017 Honda Accord Wins a Coveted Car and Driver 10Best Award*

December 12th, 2016 by

AccordThe 2017 Honda Accord is no stranger to the spotlight, and it’s just added a Car and Driver 10Best award to its list of accolades*. Few automotive honors are so sought-after and envied as a place on the 10Best list, but we weren’t at all surprised to see the Accord make the grade once again.

In fact, we’d have been shocked if it hadn’t; this is the unprecedented thirty-first Car and Driver 10Best award the Accord has scooped, making it by far the most-recognized model in the award’s 35-year history*.

The Car and Driver 10Best

The 2017 Honda Accord clearly had to outpace plenty of competitors in order to achieve its rightful place on the 10Best list, but it ultimately defended the position against the Mercedes-Benz E-class*.

In the words of Car and Driver themselves: “both are long-running, highly evolved models of protean versatility. And their confrontation at this year’s 10Best illuminates that, though their paths have been different from the start, they have converged on the same fixation: total driver satisfaction.”

The Mercedes-Benz E-class is tough vehicle to beat, but the Accord still managed to pull significantly ahead, and driving dynamics was a key area of divergence.

Despite the Merc’s much-vaunted German engineering, Car and Driver were disappointed by the steel-sprung suspension, which “transmits too many high-frequency jolts through the wheels” – you know, exactly what a suspension system isn’t supposed to do. The E-class’s 2.0L turbo “strained valiantly”, but it ultimately failed to “match the lunging spirit of the Honda’s naturally aspirated four”. Taking the Honda means better passing ability on the 36 from Boulder to Denver and decidedly stronger acceleration while you’re climbing the mountain roads up to Vail or Breckenridge for a day on the slopes.

The 2017 Honda Accord clearly rides with distinction, but that’s not all it can offer. Car and Driver called it “quiet and roomy, safe and efficient, inexpensive yet well equipped.” There’s certainly nothing to disagree with; this year’s model offers top of the line safety technologies, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and one of the most impressively spacious and indulgent cabins in the industry.
