The investments surpass $220 million across two plants in Ohio, where the new engine and transmission for the next Accord will be assembled.

A New Powertrain for the New Accord

The 2013 Honda Accord is exciting in part because of the changes under the hood. Said John Spoltman, chief engineer of the Anna, Ohio plant, “Our customers expect performance. How to get that performance with fuel economy is the challenge.” Of course, nobody doubted the prowess of Honda’s engineering team, and part of the way they’re achieving their goal is by equipping the 2013 Accord with a new transmission.

The new model will feature a continuously variable transmission, or CVT.  While all standard automatic and manual transmissions use a set number of gears to move power from the engine to the wheels, the CVT is different in that is will use a belt and two pulleys to accomplish this task. This also allows for greater versatility in the number of available gears, giving the vehicle more power even when it’s not moving fast, and increasing overall fuel-efficiency by approximately 10%.

In other words, the new CVT is in keeping with Honda’s commitment to pursuing gas-sipping technologies. It’s certainly likely that it will at least be an option across Honda’s lineup in the coming years, too, given the automaker’s commitment to providing its drivers with great fuel economy.
