Honda CR-V Sales On a Roll in the New Year

Honda CR-V sales were the best overall crossover sales in 2014, and now in 2015 Honda CR-V sales are still on top. In January the CR-V sold 23,211 units, according to Motor Trend. In second was the Ford Escape selling 20,054, and then the Toyota RAV4. All three crossovers saw a jump in sales this January as compared to January 2014. The 2015 Honda CR-V is Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year as well an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Let’s see how the CR-V compares to the Escape and RAV4.

CR-V has Better Fuel Economy, Residual Value

The Honda CR-V sales include 3,387 more units than the Toyota RAV4. In comparing the base model 2015 Honda CR-V AWD LX and the 2015 Toyota RAV4 AWD LE, you’ll notice the crossovers are similarly priced. The base price of the CR-V is $24,695 and the RAV4’s base price is $25,080. The CR-V gets better fuel economy with 26 city/ 33 highway/ 28 combined mpg*. The RAV4 achieves 22/29/25 mpg*. The residual value of the CR-V is also better. After 60 months the CR-V retains 42 percent of its value while the RAV4 holds on to 39 percent.

The CR-V and RAV4 have 4-cylinder engines, automatic transmissions, and are all-wheel drive. The CR-V gets 185 horsepower, while the RAV4 gets 176 horsepower. In terms of features, the CR-V comes standard with hill start assist, while the feature is unavailable on the RAV4. Hill start assist maintains brake-line pressure while the CR-V is stopped on a hill and the driver is moving their foot from the brake to the accelerator. Both vehicles have steering-wheel-mounted controls, cruise control, and a rearview camera standard. Both vehicles seat five and have 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are both 4-star rated overall as well as in the frontal crash test. In the side crash test both vehicles are 5-star rated. Traction control, brake assist, and antilock brakes are standard on the CR-V and RAV4. The vehicles also have similar interior measurements. The CR-V has a few more cubic feet of passenger space, while the RAV4 has a few more cubic feet of cargo volume.

The Honda CR-V sales include 3,157 more units than the Ford Escape in January 2015. When comparing the base model 2015 Honda CR-V AWD LX to the 2015 Ford Escape S, you’ll notice the CR-V is priced about $1,200 more than the Escape. The Honda CR-V is available in two-wheel or four-wheel drive options on all trim levels, while the base model Escape is only available in a two-wheel drive option. The residual value on the CR-V is also higher. After 60 months, the CR-V holds 42 percent of its value while the Escape holds 36 percent. The CR-V also gets better fuel economy with 26 city/ 33 highway/ 28 combined mpg*. The Escape achieves 22/31/25 mpg*.

The CR-V and Escape have 4-cylinder engines with automatic transmissions. The CR-V gets 185 horsepower while the Escape gets 168 horsepower. As for features, a rearview camera, steering-wheel-mounted controls, and cruise control are standard on both vehicles. The CR-V has a few more cubic feet of passenger space, while the cargo space is virtually the same for both vehicles.

The CR-V and Escape have 4-star overall crash test ratings with the NHTSA. They are also 4-star rated in the frontal crash test and 5-star rated in the side crash test. Both vehicles have traction control, antilock brakes, and vehicle stability control systems.
