How to Unlock a Steering Wheel

  • Try to turn the key and move the wheel at the same time. Use varying pressures on the key while it is in the ignition and try to move the wheel back and forth. Only apply enough pressure so that it turns slightly while locked, and keep doing this until it unlocks. Be careful not to apply too much force, as this can cause damage to the key or ignition.
  • Try using a different key, as your usual one may be worn out.
  • Use canned air to blow out any debris that may be clogging the ignition. If you don’t have canned air, try inserting and removing your key several times.
  • Lubricate the ignition with electronics cleaner or lubricant like WD-40, but use only a small amount as it is a temporary solution and you’ll need to replace the ignition cylinder eventually.
  • Replace the ignition cylinder as a last resort.
