How the Honda FCX Clarity Fuel Cell Works

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Honda Features on Thursday, April 18th, 2013 at 6:17 PM
2013 Honda FCX Clarity Electric

2013 Honda FCX Clarity Electric

We’re living in an age where alternatives to fossil fuels are becoming harder to come by because we’re using them up, political unrest makes them more difficult to obtain, and increasing concerns over the impact of carbon fuels on the environment are driving up the price of gas at the fuel tank. Fisher Honda, your local Boulder, CO car dealership, is proud to report that Honda is leading the way with a number of advanced technologies set on reducing or fully eliminating the need for fossil fuels in automobiles. At the forefront of that charge is Honda’s innovative FCX Clarity, a hydrogen fuel cell concept model that has now become available for limited release in the United States and around the world. Running completely on electricity, this powertrain eliminates the need for fossil fuels and gets a dependable 134 hp and 189 lb-ft of torque. Here’s a brief overview of how it works:

The Hydrogen Tank – The compressed hydrogen tank of the FCX Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) stores hydrogen for the creation of electricity. The design of these tanks takes up less space and has more fuel capacity.

V Flow Fuel Cell Stack – The FC Stack generates the electricity that powers the FCX. It’s smaller and more powerful than previous generations, leading to substantial improvements in performance.

Lithium-Ion Battery – Housed smartly under the rear seat, the lithium-ion battery is in charge of harboring the electricity needed from the fuel cell stack to power the car.

Power Drive Unit – The PDU is in charge of managing the flow of electricity between the components.

Electric Drive Motor – In charge of propelling the vehicle, the electric drive motor is notable for its smooth ride, efficiency, and the fact that it creates virtually no sound whatsoever. It’s like gliding on air.

Where to Get the Honda FCX

For the moment, the FCX is only available to drivers in Southern California, where the necessary hydrogen fuel station infrastructure is already in place. As the prices continue to go down and the manifold benefits become more pronounced, expect the spread of cars like the FCX to increase in speed.

In the meantime, Honda is hard at work offering models that feature “green” innovation at affordable price tags, highlighted by the Honda Civic Hybrid which gets an EPA estimated 44 mpg* for both city and highway driving. Stop by Fisher Honda in Boulder to learn more about buying or leasing the right fuel-efficient model for you!

Tire Safety Tips to Keep You Safe This Spring and Summer

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Road Safety & Driver Advice on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013 at 12:50 AM

Tire replacementThey say March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, but we’ve seen that that’s not always the case. Along with the dreary nature of rainy spring days comes an increased danger of car accidents. While winter weather is no treat to drive in, slippery roads can cause hydroplaning, and freezing rain can be worse than snow. We’ve put together some tire safety tips to follow this spring, as well as a bit of advice for the upcoming summer conditions. Stop by your local Boulder, CO Honda Service Department at Fisher Honda if you need help with any of the following tire tips or have any other vehicle problems.

1. Tire Pressure – In addition to decreasing the fuel efficiency of your vehicle, not adding air to your vehicle’s tires is downright dangerous. It adds wear and tear to your tire quickly, causing less traction when you hit the breaks. Be sure not to overload your tires either by checking the side of your tire for the correct PSI.

2. Tire Inspection – Regardless of how old your tires are they need to be checked out from time to time. You can certainly give them a look yourself to see if they have worn down, but it’s always a good idea to have an expert at your local service department check them out for you.

3. Tire Overheating – You probably won’t need to worry about this one for a few months yet, but tire overheating—especially during the summer—can be extremely dangerous. While the heat of the pavement certainly is the primary cause, risks can be diminished when you avoid under-inflation, high speeds, excessive acceleration, and heavy loads on extremely hot days.

4. Tire Selection – Choosing the right tires is important. While you can always leave it to the experts at your local service department, it’s important to keep track of which tires your car should have for each season.

5. Drive Safely in Wet Conditions – While having the right tires is essential, it doesn’t matter if you don’t know the proper way to drive. When it’s wet outside make sure you:

  • Slow down
  • Don’t tailgate
  • Turn your headlights on
  • Pull over if it’s too hard to see in front of you
  • Avoid using your breaks. Drive slowly and take your foot off the accelerator to slow down. This prevents hydroplaning.

Where to Get New Tires

Go to a local auto shop or repair center like Fisher Honda to get your tires checked, rotated, and replaced by experts. The most important things to remember are to drive cautiously, make sure your tires are in good condition, and replace your tires when it’s time. Call the Fisher Honda Service Department at (303) 647-4913 if you have any questions or would like to schedule a service appointment!

Honda Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Benefits

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Honda Programs on Thursday, April 11th, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Fisher HondaAre you in the market for an affordable vehicle but are hesitant about taking the risks associated with used cars? Understandably, many people would rather opt for the warranties and peace of mind that come with buying a new vehicle, but sometimes that is not an affordable option. Fortunately for Denver area customers, buying a Honda Certified Pre-Owned car from Fisher Honda in Boulder means you’ll get to enjoy the benefits of a new car at a reduced price. We have an excellent selection of Honda Certified Pre-Owned cars at our dealership, and our friendly staff is here to explain all of the program’s advantages. Enjoy the sense of security that comes with buying a new vehicle when you buy a Honda CPO car with all of the following benefits:

  • Certification: Every Honda Certified Pre-Owned Car must be less than 6 years old and have a maximum of 80,000 miles. At this point, each vehicle goes through a complete 150-point dealer inspection of all cosmetic and mechanical parts. Professional technicians test all of the vehicle’s major parts and systems including the brakes, engine, drivetrain, steering, suspension, tires, wheels, exhaust system, interior, and exterior. If the technicians find that any parts aren’t working properly, they are either reconditioned or replaced with Genuine Honda parts.
  • Powertrain Warranty: When you buy a Honda Certified Used Car you aren’t just buying a vehicle. You’re also purchasing a 7 year/100,000 mile warranty that covers the vehicle’s engine, drive system, and transmission.
  • Non-Powertrain Warranty: In addition to covering your vehicle’s engine, drive system, and transmission, buying a Honda Cerified Used Car also gives you plenty of additional coverage. If the vehicle is 3 years old or younger and has 36,000 miles or less on it, then its 4 year/48,000 mile warranty automatically carries over. If that warranty has already expired, then your Honda Certified Used Car will get an additional 1 year/12,000 mile warranty to cover the vehicle’s steering, suspension, electrical, air conditioning, heating, cooling, fuel system, switches, Honda audio repairs, and sensors.

Still, it can also be a time of uncertainty. Suddenly you’re on your own and expected to fend for yourself. While the world may seem full of possibilities, it can also seem big and intimidating. One thing a lot of people consider once they finish their degree is buying a new car. When you leave campus not everything you need will be right around the corner anymore, and many graduates need a new car to get to work. To help young people out with this huge expense, Honda has come up with the Honda Graduate Program. The Benefits of Leasing a Honda

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Leasing a Vehicle on Tuesday, April 9th, 2013 at 7:59 PM

Vehicle leasing offers several advantages and is, for many, an attractive alternative to financing and purchasing a new vehicle. At Fisher Honda, your Boulder area Honda dealer, we get a lot of customers asking about the benefits and advantages of leasing a Honda vehicle. Although leasing is not for everyone, and the choice depends on each driver’s individual’s needs and wants, it is a good idea to consider the advantages when making the decision.

Advantages of leasing a vehicle may include lower monthly payments, low or no down payments, fewer maintenance worries, no hassle regarding trading it in after the lease, and the opportunity to drive newer, nicer cars more often. Leasing a Honda provides these benefits, plus others.

Good Reasons to Lease a Honda

The Honda Leadership Leasing program gives you more options with less stress. The program offers competitive rates, flexible lease terms, several mileage allowances, and a waiver protecting from excess wear and use. Here is a breakdown of all of the benefits Honda offers:

  • Flexibility of Lease Terms – Honda lease contracts can span from 24 to 60 months. Drivers can even choose to do away with monthly lease payments by using the One-Payment option.
  • Varying Mileage Options – Drivers get to choose between 12,000 miles per year or 15,000 miles per year. They can also purchase extra miles at signing, so if you know you are going to travel, you won’t be charged overages at the end of the lease.
  • GAP Coverage – This stands for guaranteed asset protection coverage, and is standard on all leased Hondas. This insurance typically covers the difference (or the gap) between insurance coverage and the remaining lease charges if the vehicle is stolen or severely damaged.
  • Waiver for Excessive Wear and Use – The policy for the excess wear and use waiver is included in all Honda Leadership leases. The benefit covers incidents up to $500 per instance.
  • No Surprise or Hidden Fees – Leadership Leasing does not have purchase-option charges or disposition fees.
  • Purchase Price is Guaranteed – Honda guarantees the purchase price at lease signing, which means this price is locked in should you decide to purchase the vehicle when the lease is over.
  • Options for the End of the Lease – After your lease ends, you can decide to buy the vehicle for the agreed-upon price, trade it in for a new leased or purchased vehicle, or to just return the vehicle.

Safety Tips for Driving During a Downpour

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Road Safety & Driver Advice on Saturday, April 6th, 2013 at 3:08 PM

As the temperature starts to get warmer, soon the weather will give way to more rain than snow. While snow can be a nuisance to drive in, getting caught driving in the middle of a rain storm can be just as dangerous. Here at Fisher Honda, your local Boulder, CO Honda dealer, we are dedicated to customer safety, and while we know that we can’t prevent rainstorms from happening (that would be awesome), we hope that these tips provide our customers with the knowledge to help prevent accidents during them.

The Condition of Your Vehicle is Important

With winter over, it can be easy to neglect your car after it has survived those frigid months. However, there should be some maintenance checks done to your vehicle to make sure everything is running properly. Make sure that your tires and windshield wipers are in top shape, as their condition can make a huge difference to your visibility during torrential downpours. If your automobile has stability and/or traction control systems, make sure those are running optimally as well.

Drive Appropriately for the Road Conditions

The number one thing to keep in mind while driving during a particularly bad rainstorm is to drive slowly. Losing control of your car is not only a personally terrifying experience for you, but for other drivers around you as well. Brake softly if you must slow down, as the slippery conditions could cause your wheels to lock up if you brake too hard. In the event that your car starts to hydroplane, it is important to remember not to turn suddenly or brake too hard, as this can cause your vehicle to skid. Instead, let off the accelerator until your car slows down and you can feel it gripping the road again. Pump very lightly on the brakes if it is absolutely imperative that you slow down.

During any Inclement Weather, Put Your Headlights On

Not only will having your headlights on make it easier to see deep pools of water, other vehicles, or pedestrians, they will also make you visible to other drivers. In any case, it is important to keep a close eye on the behaviors of your fellow drivers. Any mistakes that they might make should be taken note of so that you can be more careful.

If your car does need a new set of tires or requires a spring tune-up, bring your vehicle in to our Fisher Honda Service Department! We’ll make sure your vehicle is ready for any Colorado weather that comes your way.

Vehicle Maintenance Checklist for Springtime

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Vehicle Care & Maintenance on Thursday, April 4th, 2013 at 6:34 PM

Fisher Honda Service TechWhen the snow starts melting and the flowers start blooming, many drivers feel like their cars are in the clear after enduring the winter. However, here at Fisher Honda, your local Boulder Honda dealer, we know that problems caused by the winter months may still be lingering, and that spring comes with its own host of seasonal problems. Here are a list of tips to follow in order to have your car up and running beautifully in time for some enjoyable warm weather spring driving.

  • Tend to Essential Maintenance: Any vehicle service that your car has required, but was put off to be taken care of when the weather got nicer, should be dealt with as soon as possible. Give your vehicle an oil change, get a tune up, check your tire pressure, and make sure your fluid levels are all stable.
  • Check your Belts, Hoses, and Windshield Wipers: Inspect all of these areas for any winter damage such as cracks, leaks, swelling, or fraying. Any heat or humidity will only serve to increase these problems, which will of course wait until the middle of a spring vacation road trip to give you trouble. Take care of these issues immediately to ensure your safety. Take a close look at your windshield wipers as well. If they got you through the winter just fine, that does not necessarily mean that they will get you through the summer. Risking the wipers you have now during a thunderstorm might result in decreased visibility because they can’t handle the downpour.
  • Test your Battery: If your battery had a tough time handling winter with its demanding starting conditions, it would be in your best interest to have your battery tested. While a battery that fails in warmer weather might not seem as bad as it failing during freezing temperatures, why even run the risk at all? If it does not test well, summer will only put more stress on your battery, so get it replaced if necessary.
  • Rotate and Check the Tread on your Tires: Tires with a worn-down tread will increase the risk to you or others during slick, wet conditions associated with summer driving. Decreased maneuverability and shorter stopping distances will occur with tire treads that have been around the block a few times. Also be sure to rotate your tires, as the increased temperature variation from day to night will cause tires to lose pressure more quickly.

If you follow these tips, you’ll be able to have complete peace of mind for your spring and summer road trips. At Fisher Honda, we want our customers to get the most out of their vehicles, and our maintenance and service department would be happy to perform any of the service necessities listed to keep you car safe. Stop by soon!

Clean up Your Act with the 2014 Honda Odyssey’s Built-in Vacuum Cleaner

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Honda Features on Thursday, April 4th, 2013 at 6:32 PM

“No Cheerios in the backseat!”

Sound familiar? You’re not alone—parents everywhere are constantly finding dog hair and crushed-up bits of cereal in the backseat of their cars, and it’s hard to find enough time to tidy up. Luckily, Honda has the answer to your problems. Arriving at your local Boulder, CO Honda dealer for the 2014 model year, the Honda Odyssey Touring Elite will become the first ever minivan to feature a built-in vacuum cleaner. With this car you’ll never have to worry about making a special stop to vacuum, because you’ll always have the tools to clean up on the go.

The HondaVAC

This built-in vacuum isn’t your run-of-the-mill dust buster. Instead, the HondaVAC is a Shop-Vac electric powered vacuum that requires only the power of your engine to run—no outlets or batteries are necessary. It will run continuously as long as your engine runs and will continue to operate for eight minutes after you turn the car off, leaving plenty of time for quick cleanup at a rest area or in the garage after soccer practice.

HondaVAC is fully built into the rear driver’s side cargo area, but there’s no need to worry about its lack of portability. The hose is specially designed to be just long enough to reach every part of the Honda Odyssey’s interior with ease, and the vacuum comes complete with a variety of nozzle attachments for all of those hard-to-reach crevices in between the seats.

Coming Soon to Fisher Honda: The 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite

In addition to the one-of-a-kind standard vacuum cleaner, the Odyssey’s Touring Elite edition will offer quite a few new features. Honda’s popular preventative safety features—Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning—make their debut on the Touring Elite this year, as does an expanded-view driver’s side mirror.

To learn more about the 2014 Honda Odyssey Touring Elite, contact us at 866-275-6329 or stop by Fisher Honda in Boulder! When this innovative minivan is released we encourage you to come down for a test drive—we’ll let you test out the vacuum too!

Learn How to Read a New Car’s Window Sticker

By Fisher Honda | Posted in Car Models on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013 at 11:03 PM

When reading the window sticker on a new car, chances are good that you focus on one thing—the price. But in case you didn’t know, the law requires that every new car’s window sticker (also known as a Monroney label) include some other helpful information, too.

At Fisher Honda, the premiere Denver area car dealership, we’re well-versed in the art of decoding those confusing window stickers. So without further ado, here are a few tips to demystify all of the information you’ll find on your potential ride’s Monroney label:

  • Model Information can usually be found in the top left or right corner. In addition to basics like the model name, color, and year, you’ll also find less obvious specs like the engine and transmission combination and trim level.
  • Pricing is generally located in two different places. The first is a “Pricing Information” section with an itemized list of options and fees, including the destination charge. The “MSRP” area is the total sticker price of the car before any special savings or deductions.
  • A list of standard equipment breaks down all of the features that are already included in the MSRP. The features and equipment listed should be consistent with the model’s trim level. Optional equipment is detailed in another section, and will give you a rundown of all of the factory-installed additional features or packages that a particular car contains. Knowing what optional features are included is the best way to compare a car to other, similar models on the lot.
  • Check the warranty information section to find out what kind of powertrain, bumper-to-bumper, and roadside assistance coverage you can expect, as well as the duration for each.
  • The EPA (or Fuel Economy) Label gives you the average estimated Miles Per Gallon for every car. You’ll find the combined MPG number most useful when comparing several cars on the lot. In 2013, EPA labels were redesigned to include a scannable QR code that provides smartphone users with more detailed fuel economy statistics on the spot.

At Fisher Honda, We’ve Got Stickers (and Cars) Galore

We know that’s a lot of information for one post, so in case you’d like some in-person practice reading Monroney labels, we’d be glad to lend a hand. Come to Fisher Honda today and read our window stickers to your heart’s content. While you’re at it, you may as well test drive one of our brand-new 2013 Hondas!
